Why showing an indicative price pays off
A customer who cannot find a price will estimate one anyway. They will get it wrong, usually too high, and not get in touch. An indicative figure is cheap insurance: it commits you to nothing and keeps them on the site.
It also changes the quality of enquiries. Someone who worked through the options arrives with a sense of scope and is ready for the order of magnitude. Enquiries that would have disappointed both sides fall away.
One condition: it must say under the result that this is not a quote. A number without that line gets treated as one, and the difference then gets argued about with the job already running.
When it makes no sense
When the price depends on things the customer does not know up front. A calculator asking fifteen parameters is not a tool, it is an obstacle.
And when the spread runs from thousands to hundreds of thousands. There a range on the pricing page says more than a falsely precise figure.
