Booking a slot
Booking by phone has one property nobody talks about: it only works in office hours. Someone who wants to book in the evening books with somebody else.

What booking actually solves
It is not about customer convenience, it is about the hours you otherwise spend on the phone arranging and rearranging. A calendar removes those calls and leaves you the ones where talking is genuinely needed.
Taken slots should stay visible. Hiding them is tempting, but a calendar with one free slot then looks like a calendar with nothing in it, and people leave believing they cannot get in.
Confirmation and a reminder the day before are part of the feature, not an add on. Without the reminder, no shows rise and the booking system costs more than it saves.
When it makes no sense
When the length of the appointment only becomes clear after a conversation. Fixed slots then promise time that will not be enough.
And when you already keep the calendar in another system. Then the answer is a connection, not a second calendar that drifts from the first.
